FEB 2010......Hi Gerald and Margaret. Just a quick update to let you know that our 6 new lasses are doing great. I know they were supplied as POL but I wasn't expecting such early results.
First day we had 2 eggs, second we had 3, third was up to 6 and another 5 today. They must definitely be happy.
They seem to love pecking at the snow and are so friendly whenever I go to the shed.
Busy building a run for them to get used to our land before letting them totally free range.

FEB 2010 ......Hello Gerald & Margaret, I had meant to write to you sooner than this but we seem to have to keep fighting the weather and all else is forgotten. I am delighted to tell you that as you said we had eggs before Christmas and now we get 8 a day on average, today we had 9. All the sceptics in the family are now quite fascinated by the hens and they have put our younger terriers in their place – we haven’t introduced them to the older terrier, he is quite a grumpy old man. They spend quite a lot of the time in the yard wandering about and are not at all scared of the horses, it’s more the other way round as some of the horses appeared initially to be convinced they were attack chickens. Although I have always enjoyed watching birds I was never happy about the idea of touching them and certainly wouldn’t pick them up, however the majority of our chooks are more than happy to be picked up for a cuddle – never really thought I would be doing that. I was concerned about their ability to survive the very low temperatures we were getting but they are hardy little creatures and do not seem at all bothered although they don’t venture far in the snow. JAN 2010..........Hi again, Just to let you know the birds have settled in perfectly and have retained the calmness they showed when I collected them, they really are so friendly and nothing seems to faze them . I am getting upwards of twenty eggs a day now from the twenty four birds - even on these winter mornings! I can only thank you once again and say the long drive was worth it . A. We stuck to Beryl, Flora, Ferrari and Roast and they seem to like their names.

They are so friendly and if I go into the garden they all chat away and love to be stroked. Its so much fun watching them roam around the garden. They each have their own personality, Kiev is slightly bigger and nosy. Scooby laid the first egg. Jess is playful and Rosie likes to escape if you leave the door open too long. Hi Gerald and Margaret.....(JULY '09) Just to let you know that the four girls (Clara, Charlotte, Harriet and Henrietta) have settled in really well into their new home. They are so tame and Charlotte has already jumped up onto our knees to be stroked, best of all Clara produced our very first egg this morning (sun) They already have their own personalities (Charlotte is so mischievous and definitely the boss!)and they are such fun to watch, even if we sit in the garden on our chairs they never go far from us. HelloGerald and Margaret....11/05/09 Just a wee note for you to put on your testimonials page,,our 7 Girls have settled in great, as soon as Martin opened the box last Friday (1/5/09) there was an egg, and they have all laid each day since they arrived. They are very nosy and come up to the wire every time someone comes into the garden.. they even come up to us in the coop to get petted,,never thought I would pet a chicken!! Thought we'd drop you a line to say thanks so much for the six chickens we collected from you in February.
Despite a two hour journey down the road and arriving to five inches of snow which lasted for over a week, (I'm sure they'd didn't know what had happened to them) they have settled in well.
They all come running afer us if we're out in the garden and are the so great with the kids who just love feeding them from their hands. they've all developed their own little personalities and are great fun to watch.

If you are reading this while still deciding "will we-won't we?"...then can I just say...Do It ! :). We have a medium sized garden and the 3 hens are just in their element with no visible carnage on the garden so far !. They are fascinating little creatures to watch who seem to enjoy some company...even the dog has made friends!

Just wanted to let you know that our hens have settled in beautifully. There was great excitement today when we got our first egg! I must say though that the eggs will just be an added bonus to owning our four lovely girls. We all love them to bits! Just a wee note to let you know how we are getting on. Hens,(NEW ISA WARRENS) are doing great, they have total free range in our garden and have in fact eaten everything edible in my vegetable garden. I think I need to fence it to keep them out! They are laying well now, we are getting four eggs every morning now for the last couple of weeks. We even had a double yolk a couple of days ago! They are lovely birds with such a good temperament, they allow me to pick them up and handle them, and they come running as soon as I open the door. The only time they have bothered my kids is when they were hungry and thought my three-year old had food in the bucket he was carrying to collect the eggs in! They gave him a good chase around the garden before I realised what was going on... but generally they don't worry about the children at all.
My only regret is that I didn't take you up on your offer of more birds - they are so easy to look after, and ten would have been no more work than four! All my neighbours want some hens now, too - and they are asking for more eggs than we can supply! We may be back in touch in the near future looking to expand our flock.
Thanks again for your hospitality, you and Margaret were both so kind to me (and the sandwich and cuppa were much appreciated!) I would definitely recommend Happy Hen Hoose to my friends.

Just a quick question though, do chicks need access to grit? If not, when does it need introducing? I called ahead and after a thoroughly relaxed and interesting conversation I left with three hens and a cockerel. Since then Margaret and Gerald have continued to provide excellent on-going advice and my hens remain happy, healthy and prolific layers of delicious eggs. Just recently I returned to purchase some new hens. I find a visit to them at Potrknockie is not only all about chickens, but a good excuse to while away some time in excellent company.
