UK Legislation for keeping hens
Will I be allowed to keep hens?
The simple answer is YES. You may wish to check with your local authority and if you have a lease, or rented property, the conditions therein. But it is very unlikely there should be a problem.
Can I keep as many as I want?
If you decide to keep more than 50 birds, you must register the number with DEFRA. You will find them at www.dfra.gov.uk. Less than 50, no registration required.
Can I sell my eggs to anywhere?
Basically you can sell eggs at farm gate and customers direct, for personal consumption. You cannot supply eggs to retail premises, hotels etc. Recent new regulations (June 08) adds some restrictions which should be checked, but does not affect above.
Will you, or other suppliers deliver my poultry?
Understandably, there are many regulations around the welfare concerning the supply and transport of poultry. And to adhere to these regulations, most small breeders/suppliers, like ourselves, sell their poultry on a “collection basis” only.
