Our Traditional Large Fowl Poultry

Recently, utility birds have taken over the role of the regular layers. But there is always a place for the “Older, Established, Popular, Farmhouse, Breeds”.
Within this group there is a reasonable choice and it is unlikely you won’t be able to find here, or at other poultry breeders around the country, the bird to suit your needs.

CUCKOO MARAN

A heavy, dual-purpose, breed with a very gentle temperament.Well known for their tasty, dark brown eggs, regretfully some breeds, sold as true Marans, do not live up to expectations. Our present stock were bred of good dark egg layers, so we are expecting some really good dark coloured eggs this coming year. And we would hope to have hatching eggs for sale and consumption. They are good layers.

FRENCH , COPPER , MARAN

french copper maran

Again this is a pure bred bird and not a hybrid version. Not at all like the Cuckoo Maran. As the name suggests, the copper and black colour predominates. It is not a large bird. But it is a layer of very dark brown eggs. Pure bred quality birds are always difficult to come by. Hatching eggs should be available this year.

welsummer

WELSUMMER

A light breed, originating from the Netherlands. It’s the striking bird you see on your “Cornflake Packet”. The hens are lovely. The cockerels are Magnificent.

A real beautiful “Farm Yard Bird” with lovely colouring. Another recognized layer of rich, dark brown, eggs. Upwards, of 180 eggs per year.

wynadotte hen

WYANDOTTE

A Heavy American Breed and could be a dual-purpose bird. They do come in a range of colours, but we believe the white bird is the best layer. This is the one we keep and it lays usually something around 200+ eggs per year. The eggs are tinted in colour. The Wyandotte is a handsome, friendly, docile, bird.

Because our customers who buy eggs for eating purpose, enjoy their eggs in a range of colours, we do also stock and occasionally breed from our own stock of ARAUCANAS and LEGBARS... the “BLUE EGG LAYERS” Locally we do sell hatching eggs of these breeds, so I suppose we could post these eggs on as well if the demand was not too great.

The following breeds, although not listed by the RBST would be seen by most poultry keepers as rare and certainly hard to come by.Just like the rare breeds mentioned previously we are restricted to the numbers we can breed and therefore availability, because of high demand cannot be guaranteed unless advance notice is given.
