How many Hens/Chickens?

How many should I buy?
Give this a bit thought. More hens can be added at a later date. This does involve a “process”, which is usually without a problem. But it is sometimes easier to buy the numbers you feel you require at the start.

Can I buy just one or two hens?
Some breeders and suppliers accept only large orders and will not to supply in small numbers. Others, such as our selves, are more than happy to sell in small numbers. For welfare reasons however, three hens are the minimum number supplied by us.

For welfare reasons....meaning?

Hens enjoy your company and generally enjoy each others company (where one goes....the others will follow) Buying only two birds, one will eventually die and the one bird on her own is not good.

So three hens are the "magic number"?

Well never two......most of our customers buy around four to six.....and just as many , then come back for more.

Too many good laying hens....too many eggs?

It has to be a consideration. But we can honestly say we have not had even one of our many past customers raise this as a problem.Your fresh eggs will always be in demand.

So if I have a Big House and Big Garden get loads of hens?

If you have thought it through and you are buying birds for the right reasons....then that is ok.

My main reason is to get plenty eggs......so plenty of hens.

And that is ok...as long as their welfare and health comes first.

More hens will mean more work?

We have had many customers who have added substantially to their flock and in the terms of more work it has made little difference....an extra feeder and drinker.

The house I bought I was assured could accommodate 12 hens. Should I just order 12?

This issue around spacing is the most important aspect. Better six happy, healthy hens, than twelve overcrowded unhappy birds. Get this right.....a good breeder/supplier will guide you.

You have quite a bit on your own sight about hen houses, so go with that?

There may be as many differing views on housing hens as there is hen houses, but what is there will keep you right....and every caring poultry keeper knows not to overcrowd their poultry.

It was my intention to start with three and then build up from there.

Starting this way may help your confidence. But there can be an issue around introducing new hens to an established flock, (can be overcome). Although I probably said this earlier....if you have the space and it is your intention to increase, (or have a larger flock in the future) do it now. You will love them....You will not even notice the extra workload....you will never have any spare eggs......and you will have double the fun !!
